Duke Farms and its collection

Duke Farms
Source

The Duke Gardens, located in Somerset County, New Jersey, were recognized as one of the most significant glass house collections in America. These gardens were the creation of Doris Duke, a prominent philanthropist and horticulturist. The gardens were larger than the New York Botanical Garden's Enid A. Haupt Conservatory, showcasing the grandeur and scale of Duke's vision.

Design and Installation of Duke Gardens

Doris Duke herself designed and installed the Gardens. Each of the eleven Duke Display Gardens is a full-scale re-creation of a garden theme, country, or period. This showcases Duke's personal touch and her wide-ranging interests in different styles and periods of garden design.

Opening of Duke Farms

Duke Farms, which includes the Duke Gardens, opened to the public on May 19, 2012. Since then, it has been a destination for tourists and locals alike, offering a unique opportunity to explore the gardens and the wider estate.

Duke Farms is a large estate turned into an environmental center and public park in Hillsborough Township, New Jersey. While not a traditional museum, it offers visitors a unique outdoor experience focused on nature, sustainability, and conservation. The property features extensive gardens, walking trails, and a restored mansion that serves as an education center. Many visitors appreciate the well-maintained grounds, diverse ecosystems, and opportunities for bird watching and photography. The bike-friendly paths and seasonal events are often highlighted as positives. However, some reviewers mention that certain areas of the property can be crowded during peak times, and a few note that more informational signs along the trails would be helpful. The Orchid Range greenhouse is frequently praised, but occasional complaints arise about limited indoor facilities during inclement weather. Overall, Duke Farms is generally well-regarded for its commitment to environmental education and providing a peaceful natural retreat, though it may not suit those expecting a more traditional museum experience.
