The Church of St. Nicholas and Peter, also known as the 'Sistine Chapel of Valencia', is one of the city's main attractions. Located in the El Carmen district in the historical center of Valencia, the church is renowned for its ceiling paintings. However, due to its location, it can be somewhat difficult for visitors to find as it is largely surrounded by other buildings.
The Church of St. Nicholas and Peter underwent several renovations throughout its history. In the late 17th century, the interior was redesigned in the Baroque style. The architect Juan Bautista Pérez Castiel covered the interior with sgraffito, stucco, and reliefs. The ceiling paintings were designed by Antonio Palomino and executed by his student Dionís Vidal between 1697 and 1700.
The Church of St. Nicholas and Peter is particularly known for its ceiling paintings, which cover an area of 2000 m². These paintings, designed by Antonio Palomino and executed by his student Dionís Vidal, tell the stories of the church's patrons. The vault is divided into two areas, each narrating the story of one of the church's patrons, and converge in the choir area. The paintings include fictitious openings that seem to give a view of the heavens.
