The Casa de Cultura Mario Quintana (CCMQ), originally known as the Hotel Majestic, is a historic Brazilian building that now serves as a cultural center in the city of Porto Alegre. It is considered one of the largest and best-equipped cultural centers in Brazil. The building's history as the Hotel Majestic adds to its charm and cultural significance.
The Casa de Cultura Mario Quintana was named in honor of Mário Quintana, one of Brazil's most renowned poets. Quintana was born in the city of Alegrete but considered Porto Alegre his true home. He lived in the building, then the Hotel Majestic, from 1968 to 1980 in apartment 217. This connection to a significant figure in Brazilian literature adds to the cultural value of the Casa.
The Casa de Cultura Mario Quintana, owned by the State of Rio Grande do Sul, is a hub of cultural activity. It has served as the temporary home for various departments of the Secretary of Culture, including the Secretary's office and the Museum of Art of Rio Grande do Sul. Today, it houses a wide variety of cultural spaces, including libraries, museums, collections, galleries, theaters, cinema rooms, cafes, a candy store, a bookstore, and numerous rooms for various uses. This variety of cultural offerings makes the Casa a vibrant and diverse destination for visitors.
