Barrington Court
Source

Barrington Court is a historical Tudor manor house that was completed in the late 1550s. It is located in Barrington, near Ilminster, Somerset, England. The manor house also features a vernacular stable court that was built in 1675. This historical site offers a glimpse into the architectural style and living conditions of the Tudor period.

Acquisition and Renovation by the National Trust

The National Trust acquired Barrington Court in 1907. In the 1920s, the house underwent significant renovations under the supervision of Colonel Lyle and his wife 'Ronnie'. The renovations helped to preserve the historical integrity of the house while making it more accessible and enjoyable for visitors.

Historical Gardens and Landscape

Originally, Barrington Court was surrounded by a medieval deer park. In the 17th century, a formal garden was constructed. However, this garden had largely disappeared until the renowned garden designer Gertrude Jekyll laid out a new garden in the Arts and Crafts style. This garden is a significant feature of the property today, offering visitors a chance to enjoy its beauty and tranquility.

Barrington Court Reviews

Barrington Court has 1 rating.

  • Apollo's Insights AI-Generated

Barrington Court, located in Barrington, England, is a Tudor manor house managed by the National Trust. Visitors generally appreciate the well-preserved architecture and beautiful gardens. The house itself, while impressive from the outside, is largely unfurnished inside, which some find disappointing. However, many enjoy the opportunity to explore the empty rooms and imagine how they might have looked in the past. The surrounding gardens and orchards are often highlighted as a standout feature, offering pleasant walks and seasonal beauty. The on-site restaurant receives positive mentions for its use of produce grown in the estate's kitchen garden. Some visitors note that the entrance fee can be considered high, especially given the lack of furnishings inside the house. Overall, Barrington Court offers a mix of architectural history, garden beauty, and a peaceful countryside atmosphere, though the experience may vary depending on individual expectations.
