The Austin Museum of Popular Culture, also known as AusPop, is a nonprofit organization based in Texas. Its mission is to collect, preserve, and exhibit art and memorabilia that showcase Austin's diverse contributions to popular culture on a global scale. This includes a wide range of items, from concert posters to non-traditional art forms, all of which provide a unique insight into the city's vibrant cultural history.
The collections at the Austin Museum of Popular Culture have expanded over time to include memorabilia from various live music venues of the 1970s. These include Threadgills, the Vulcan Gas Company, the Austin Opry House, and Antone's. These collections provide a fascinating glimpse into the city's rich musical history and the venues that helped shape it.
In September 2019, the museum underwent a significant change. The executive director, Leea Mechling, announced that the museum would be changing its name to the Austin Museum of Popular Culture, or AusPop for short. Additionally, the museum relocated to a new space on North Lamar, situated behind Threadgill’s restaurant. This move has allowed the museum to expand its exhibitions and continue its mission in a new and exciting location.
