The Aquarium of Western Australia (AQWA) is a privately owned establishment located in Hillarys, approximately 20 km north-west of Perth City. It is a popular destination for both tourists and locals. AQWA was Australia's largest aquarium when it opened and still boasts the country's largest single aquarium and underwater tunnel, the 3 million litre Shipwreck Coast exhibit.
AQWA houses over 45 unique displays that showcase only native Western Australian marine life and living corals, many of which are endemic to WA's waters. The aquarium specializes in marine animals that inhabit the 12,000-kilometre long coastline of Western Australia. In total, AQWA holds over 4,000,000 litres of water and is home to approximately 400 species of marine life.
AQWA is themed as an underwater journey along Western Australia's coastline and is divided into distinct zones. These include the Great Southern, the Shipwreck Coast, the Perth Coast, and the Far North. Each zone represents the unique marine life and habitats found along WA's expansive and varied coast.
AQWA also hosts one of Perth's most unique dining experiences. Visitors have the opportunity to enjoy a three-course meal in the underwater tunnel surrounded by marine life. The Dine Beneath the Sea experience is held after-hours regularly throughout the year. Bookings are essential for this unique dining experience.

AQWA, The Aquarium of Western Australia, offers visitors a glimpse into the marine life of Western Australia's coastline. Located in Perth, this aquarium showcases a diverse array of aquatic species native to the region.
The highlight for many visitors is the underwater tunnel, which allows for an immersive experience as various marine creatures, including sharks and rays, swim overhead. The touch pool, where visitors can interact with marine life, is particularly popular among children and families.
While the aquarium provides educational value through its exhibits and informative displays about local marine ecosystems, some visitors have noted that the facility could benefit from updates and expansions. The size of the aquarium is considered relatively compact compared to other major aquariums, which may leave some visitors wanting more.
The staff is generally reported to be friendly and knowledgeable, enhancing the educational aspect of the visit. However, some visitors have mentioned that certain areas could use more frequent maintenance and cleaning.
Feeding shows and presentations are often cited as engaging and informative, though the frequency and variety of these events may vary. The gift shop offers a range of souvenirs, but prices are considered to be on the higher side by some visitors.
Overall, AQWA provides a decent introduction to Western Australia's marine life, particularly suitable for families with children. While it may not compete with the world's largest aquariums, it offers a focused look at local aquatic species and ecosystems.
