The Aquarium of Western Australia (AQWA) is a privately owned establishment situated in Hillarys, Western Australia. It is located approximately 20 km north-west of Perth City, making it easily accessible for tourists and locals alike.
When it first opened, AQWA was the largest aquarium in Australia. It still holds the title for having Australia's largest single aquarium and underwater tunnel, known as the Shipwreck Coast exhibit. This exhibit holds 3 million litres of water, providing a unique and immersive experience for visitors.
AQWA is home to over 45 unique displays that exclusively showcase native Western Australian marine life and living corals. Many of these species are endemic to Western Australia's waters, providing visitors with a unique opportunity to learn about and appreciate the region's marine biodiversity.
For an additional fee, visitors can book guided experiences that offer a closer look at the animals and provide behind-the-scenes knowledge. Snorkelers and qualified scuba divers have the opportunity to enter the water and encounter hundreds of fish, large sharks, stingrays, and turtles by joining the aquarium's Dive or Snorkel with Sharks program.

AQWA The Aquarium of Western Australia has 1 rating.
AQWA The Aquarium of Western Australia, located in Hillarys, offers visitors a glimpse into the diverse marine life of Western Australia's coastline. The aquarium features a variety of exhibits showcasing local marine ecosystems, including a large underwater tunnel where visitors can observe sharks, rays, and other sea creatures swimming overhead. While many visitors appreciate the opportunity to see and learn about native aquatic species, some find the overall experience somewhat limited in scope compared to larger aquariums. The touch pool and interactive displays are popular, especially among families with children. However, a common criticism is that the facility could benefit from updates and expansions to enhance the overall experience. The staff is generally described as friendly and knowledgeable, contributing positively to the educational aspect of the visit. While AQWA provides an informative introduction to Western Australia's marine life, some visitors feel the admission price is a bit high for the size and range of exhibits offered. Despite these mixed reviews, many still consider it a worthwhile visit, particularly for those interested in local marine biology.
