Liverpool is a city in England and is located on the River Mersey. While Liverpool expanded its port, the city grew with now more than 450,000 inhabitants. In the 18th century, Liverpool grew rapidly through trade with the Caribbean, Ireland and mainland Europe. But the transatlantic slave trade also stimulated growth, and by the nineteenth century more than 40% of the world trade passed the port of Liverpool. The part of Liverpool in the old harbor area, Liverpool Maritime Mercantile City, is featured on the UNESCO World Heritage List. Today, the importance of the port of Liverpool has dropped and the tourist sector has grown in importance and size.
