Vitry-le-François is a commune in northeastern France, located in the Marne department in the Grand Est region. The town was founded in 1545 by King Francis I of France to replace the older town of Vitry-en-Perthois, which had been destroyed during conflicts with Emperor Charles V.
The town was built following a systematic grid pattern, which was innovative for its time, and features characteristic architecture from the Renaissance period. At its center lies the Place d'Armes, a large square surrounded by notable buildings including the Church of Notre-Dame.
While smaller than many French cultural centers, Vitry-le-François maintains several cultural institutions and serves as an important historical example of 16th-century urban planning. The town's position at the junction of the Marne River and the Marne-Rhine Canal has historically made it an important trading center.
