Viterbo is a historic city in the Lazio region of central Italy, located approximately 80 kilometers north of Rome. Founded by the Etruscans, the city is known for its exceptionally well-preserved medieval architecture and its significant role in papal history.

The historic center, surrounded by ancient walls, features the Palazzo dei Papi (Papal Palace), which served as a papal residence in the 13th century. Viterbo is particularly noted for its San Pellegrino quarter, considered one of the best-preserved medieval neighborhoods in Europe. The city maintains a rich cultural heritage through its numerous churches, palaces, and fountains, many dating back to the Middle Ages and Renaissance periods.

The thermal springs in the area have been known since Roman times and continue to attract visitors today. The city is also home to the University of Tuscia, which contributes to its contemporary cultural life.
