Vegreville is a town located in central Alberta, Canada, approximately 100 kilometers east of Edmonton. The town was established in 1906 and was named after Father Valentin Vegreville, a Roman Catholic missionary who served the local area.
Vegreville is particularly known for its large Ukrainian heritage, as many Ukrainian immigrants settled in the region during the late 19th and early 20th centuries. This cultural influence is prominently displayed through the town's most famous landmark: the Vegreville Pysanka (Ukrainian Easter Egg), which was constructed in 1975 to commemorate the Royal Canadian Mounted Police's centennial. The town continues to celebrate its Ukrainian heritage through various cultural events and maintains strong ties to its agricultural roots, being situated in a productive farming region.
