Medellín is a historic town located in the province of Badajoz, in Spain's Extremadura region. The town is notable for being the birthplace of Hernán Cortés, the Spanish conquistador who led the conquest of the Aztec Empire.
The town's history dates back to Roman times when it was known as Metellinum, established as a colony in 79 BC. The Roman heritage is still visible today, particularly in the well-preserved Roman theater which sits on a hill overlooking the town. The medieval castle, perched atop the hill, offers panoramic views of the surrounding Guadiana River Valley.
Today, Medellín maintains its historical character while serving as a cultural center that preserves and shares its rich heritage through its archaeological sites and historical monuments.
