The park spans an impressive area of 1 million and 750 thousand square meters, with 600 thousand square meters dedicated to the preservation of cerrado, a type of savanna ecosystem. Since 1959, the park has been home to the city's zoo, making it a significant part of Belo Horizonte's natural heritage.

Wildlife Diversity at the Park

The park is home to a diverse range of wildlife, housing approximately 1500 animals from over 250 different species. These include amphibians, birds, mammals, and reptiles, with representatives from all five continents of the world. This diversity makes the park a fascinating destination for wildlife enthusiasts and families alike.

Botanical Garden Features

The Botanical Garden of the Zoo-Botanical Foundation of Belo Horizonte offers visitors a chance to explore thematic gardens and greenhouses that represent the biomes of Minas Gerais. The garden also features exhibitions of bromeliads, araceae, succulent plants, medicinal and toxic plants, and a variety of flowers and colors, including endemic and endangered species. This provides a unique opportunity to learn about the region's diverse flora.

The São Francisco Basin Aquarium

On March 5, 2010, the park opened the largest thematic freshwater aquarium in the country. This aquarium is the first of its kind to exclusively portray life in the São Francisco Basin. It offers visitors a unique opportunity to learn about and appreciate the aquatic life of this important Brazilian river basin.

Zoological Park and Botanical Garden Reviews

Zoological Park and Botanical Garden has 1 rating.

  • Apollo's Insights AI-Generated

The Zoological Park and Botanical Garden in Belo Horizonte offers visitors a chance to experience both local and exotic wildlife in a green urban setting. The zoo houses a variety of animals, including big cats, primates, and birds, while the botanical garden showcases diverse plant species. Many visitors appreciate the park's expansive grounds and the opportunity for a peaceful walk amidst nature. The zoo's efforts in conservation and education are often noted positively.

However, some areas of improvement have been mentioned by visitors. The enclosures for some animals are considered outdated or small by modern zoo standards. Maintenance of certain areas and facilities could be enhanced to provide a better experience. Some visitors have reported that signage and information about the animals and plants could be more comprehensive and available in multiple languages.

The park is generally seen as a good value for the admission price, especially for families and nature enthusiasts. It provides a welcome green space within the city and serves as an educational resource for schools and the community. While it may not compete with world-renowned zoos, it offers a pleasant day out for locals and tourists alike.

Overall, the Zoological Park and Botanical Garden in Belo Horizonte provides a decent experience for visitors interested in wildlife and plant life, though there is room for modernization and improvement in some areas.
