The XIT Ranch, which the museum is named after, was a cattle ranch located in the Texas Panhandle. It was operational from 1885 to 1912, making it a significant part of the region's history. The ranch covered an impressive 3,000,000 acres or 12,000 square kilometers of land in the Great Plains.
Founded in 1885, the XIT Ranch was home to Longhorn cattle. These cattle, descended from feral Spanish domestic cattle, were well adapted to the harsh living conditions of the Great Plains. This aspect of the ranch's history provides insight into the cattle ranching practices of the time.
At its peak, the XIT Ranch was a massive operation, holding more than 150,000 cattle. These cattle were enclosed by 2,400 kilometers of barbed wire, a testament to the scale of the ranch. Additionally, the ranch featured 325 windmills and over 100 dams, further demonstrating the extensive infrastructure that was in place.
