In 2017, the Virginia Sports Hall of Fame underwent a significant change. To reduce expenses and dependence on government support, and to increase sponsorship interest, it changed its business model. The Hall of Fame closed its building in Portsmouth and moved its operations to the Town Center in nearby Virginia Beach. This move has allowed the Hall of Fame to continue its mission in a more sustainable and financially viable way.
After relocating to the Town Center in Virginia Beach, the Virginia Sports Hall of Fame placed many of its educational exhibits and the Hall of Honor, which lists all inductees, in high-rise office and hotel lobbies within the popular mixed-use development. This strategic placement allows visitors to easily access and explore the exhibits, enhancing their understanding and appreciation of Virginia's sports history.
The Virginia Sports Hall of Fame has made its displays accessible to the public through a unique and free pedestrian tour called "Walk the Hall". In addition to this, it has started hosting a variety of sports-oriented programs throughout the Town Center of Virginia Beach, where its offices are now located. These initiatives provide visitors with an engaging and informative experience, allowing them to delve deeper into the world of sports.
