The museum is the house of the banker and collector Simon van Gijn who lived there from 1864 until his death in 1922. Van Gijn left the house and most of his collections to the Old Dordrecht Society. His wish was for the collections to be made publicly accessible and for his home to be converted into a museum, maintaining the interior in its original state as much as possible. The house has been open to the public since 1925. Alongside interiors dating back to the 17th, 18th and 19th centuries, the museum also has a splendid collection of arts and crafts, a toy collection (in the attic) and an extensive collection

The Van Gijn House in Dordrecht, Netherlands, offers visitors a glimpse into 19th-century Dutch life through the well-preserved home of banker and collector Simon van Gijn. The museum showcases an impressive collection of art, antiques, and historical artifacts spread across three floors. Visitors appreciate the authentic period rooms, including the kitchen, bedrooms, and study, which provide an immersive experience of upper-class living in the 1800s. The museum's attention to detail in maintaining the original decor and furnishings is particularly noteworthy.
Many reviewers highlight the extensive collection of toys and dolls housed in the attic, which adds a charming and nostalgic element to the visit. The museum's garden, though small, is described as a pleasant and tranquil space. Guided tours are available and often praised for providing insightful context about the house and its former inhabitants.
Some visitors note that the museum can feel a bit crowded during peak times, and a few mention that additional information in English would be beneficial for international tourists. While most find the entrance fee reasonable, a small number of reviewers consider it slightly high.
