USS Tang and its collection

USS Tang
Source

The USS Tang (SS-563) is a significant piece of naval history, having served as a submarine in the United States Navy from 1951 to 1980. It was the leader of its class and was later transferred to the Turkish Navy, where it continued its service until 2004. This submarine is a testament to the naval capabilities of the mid-20th century and offers a unique insight into the life and operations of submariners during this period.

Transfer and Service in the Turkish Navy

On March 21, 1980, the USS Tang (SS-563) was transferred to the Republic of Turkey on loan. The Turkish Navy took over the submarine and renamed it as TCG Piri Reis (S-343). It continued to serve until its retirement in 2004. This part of the submarine's history highlights the international cooperation and exchange between the United States and Turkey during the late 20th century.
