The Trailside Museum of Natural History is situated in the historic Army Theatre at Fort Robinson State Park. This location is three miles west of Crawford, Nebraska on U.S. Route 20. The museum is housed in a building that has a rich history, having served as a theater and gymnasium for the Fort Robinson army post.
The building that houses the Trailside Museum was acquired by the University of Nebraska in 1955. The museum was officially opened at Fort Robinson in 1961. In 1988, the building was listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Additionally, it is part of the Fort Robinson and Red Cloud Agency historic district.
The most significant exhibition at the Trailside Museum is a pair of 14-foot mammoth skeletons that were discovered nearby. These mammoths apparently locked tusks in a fight to the death and subsequently starved. The museum showcases these fossils, providing a glimpse into the area's ice age history.
