The Theodosius Cistern, or Şerefiye Sarnıcı as it is known in Turkish, is a significant historical site in Istanbul, Turkey. This covered cistern is a relic from the era of Byzantine Constantinople, offering a glimpse into the city's rich past. It is located in the Binbirdirek neighborhood, within the historic district of Fatih, west of the Philoxenos Cistern, near the town hall of the former Eminönü district. The entrance to the restored building is on Piyer Loti Caddesi (Pierre Loti Street).
The Theodosius Cistern is believed to have been constructed by Emperor Theodosius II in the 5th century. This historical assumption places the cistern in the fifth region of Constantinople. Although there are no historical sources to confirm this, the cistern's existence and its architectural features suggest a timeline that aligns with the reign of Theodosius II.
The Theodosius Cistern underwent a significant restoration period that lasted eight years. This extensive work was completed in April 2018, at which point the cistern was opened to the public. Visitors can now explore this historical site and appreciate the careful restoration work that has brought the cistern back to its former glory.
