The New Orleans Jazz Museum - New Orleans Mint
Source

The building that houses the New Orleans Mint has served various purposes over the years. It has been an Analysis Office, a warehouse for the United States Coast Guard, and even a nuclear shelter. Since 1981, it has been part of the Louisiana State Museum, adding another layer of historical significance to its existence.

Museum Exhibits and Future Plans

In April 2015, the museum began to expand its exhibits to include the instruments used by some of New Orleans' most notable jazz musicians, as well as photographs and posters. There are plans to convert the museum into the Louisiana Music Museum, which would further enhance its cultural and historical significance.

The Louisiana Historical Center

The Louisiana Historical Center is located on the third floor of the New Orleans Mint building. This center houses collections of colonial-era manuscripts, maps, and other material sources in a wide range of media. It is open to anyone interested in the history and culture of Louisiana, making it a valuable resource for both locals and tourists alike.

The New Orleans Jazz Museum, located in the historic Old U.S. Mint building, offers visitors an immersive experience into the rich history of jazz music. The museum houses an extensive collection of instruments, recordings, and memorabilia that showcase the evolution of jazz and its significant impact on New Orleans culture.

Visitors often praise the museum's interactive exhibits, which allow them to listen to various jazz styles and even try their hand at playing some instruments. The museum's collection of Louis Armstrong's trumpets and other legendary musicians' instruments is particularly noteworthy. Many reviewers appreciate the informative displays that provide context to the birth and development of jazz in New Orleans.

The museum's location in the French Quarter is convenient for tourists, and the building itself, with its historic architecture, adds to the overall experience. Some visitors mention enjoying the occasional live performances in the museum's performance space, which brings the exhibits to life.

However, some reviewers note that the museum could benefit from updates to certain exhibits and improved organization of information. A few visitors mention that some areas feel a bit dated or could use more interactive elements to engage younger audiences. Additionally, some people find the admission price slightly high for the size of the museum.

Overall, The New Orleans Jazz Museum - New Orleans Mint provides an educational and entertaining experience for jazz enthusiasts and those interested in New Orleans' musical heritage. While there's room for some improvements, most visitors find it a worthwhile stop during their time in the city.
