The Museum of Modern Art in Wakayama (MOMAW) is a modern art museum situated in the Fukiage district of Wakayama, Japan. It is conveniently located near the Wakayama Castle, making it an accessible destination for tourists visiting the castle. The museum was initially established as the Wakayama Prefectural Museum in 1963 and was later transformed into a modern art museum in 1970.
The MOMAW's collection has grown significantly since its inception. Starting with 83 works acquired by the Wakayama Prefectural Art Museum in 1963, the collection has expanded to approximately 13,000 works as of 2020. The collection is diverse, encompassing Japanese painting, Western art, sculptures, and woodcuts from the Meiji era to the present. This wide range of art forms provides a comprehensive overview of modern and contemporary art for visitors.
