Genji Monogatari Scrolls at The Gotoh Museum

One of the highlights of the Gotoh Museum is the display of parts of the oldest existing illustrated scroll of the Genji monogatari, dating from the 12th century. These precious artifacts are displayed each year at the museum for about a week in April/May, coinciding with the Golden Week holidays. This is a unique opportunity to view these historical treasures.

Murasaki Shikibu Scrolls at The Gotoh Museum

The Gotoh Museum also houses fragments with illustrations from the illuminated scrolls of the 13th-century diary of Murasaki Shikibu. These fragments, which include three illustrations and three pages of text, are another important part of the museum's collection and are considered a national treasure. They are displayed at the museum each year for about a week in the fall.
