The Cobblestone Historic District, located along the NY 104 Ridge Road in Childs, New York, is a unique showcase of cobblestone architecture. This district comprises three buildings that exemplify this architectural style, which was developed to a high degree in the regions of upstate New York near Lake Ontario. These buildings are a testament to the architectural ingenuity of the time and offer a glimpse into the region's rich history.
The buildings in the Cobblestone Historic District are primarily designed in the Federal and Greek Revival styles, typical of their era. Despite renovations that introduced elements of Italianate and Gothic Revival styles later in the 19th century, the buildings remain largely intact in their original designs. This preservation of original design elements offers visitors a chance to experience the architectural styles of the past.
The largest building in the Cobblestone Historic District is a former Universalist church, which holds the distinction of being the oldest cobblestone church in North America. Today, this building serves as a museum, offering visitors a chance to delve into the history of the region and its architecture. Another notable building in the district is a school, which is one of only two buildings that use cobblestones as an outer veneer, further highlighting the unique use of this material in the area's architecture.
