The Temple of Clitunno, located in the town of Campello sul Clitunno, south of Trevi, is a small early medieval church. This location is approximately one kilometer downstream from the headwaters of the Clitunno River. Despite its distinctly classical architecture, archaeological work has shown that the structure is much later, possibly dating back to the 5th or 6th centuries AD.
UNESCO World Heritage Site
The Temple of Clitunno is part of the "Centers of power of the Lombards in Italy (568-774 AD)", a collection of seven sites that bear witness to Lombard architecture, painting, and sculpture. These sites were inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List in June 2011, marking them as significant cultural landmarks.
Interior and Frescoes
The interior of the Temple of Clitunno includes a nave, which is covered with a barrel vault and frames the apse at the bottom. Visitors can also see faded frescoes from the 7th century, which depict the Savior and Saints Peter and Paul. These frescoes are the oldest in Umbria, making them a significant part of the region's cultural heritage.
