The Tandanya National Aboriginal Cultural Institute, often referred to as Tandanya, is an art museum situated on Grenfell Street in Adelaide, South Australia. This museum specializes in promoting Indigenous Australian art, including visual art, music, and storytelling. It is the oldest Aboriginal-owned and -run cultural centre in Australia, deriving its name from Tarndanya, the Kaurna Aboriginal people's name for the Adelaide city centre and parklands area, meaning 'place of the red kangaroo'.
The centre's core activities encompass a wide range of cultural and artistic experiences. These include visual arts through an exhibitions program, performing arts through events, theatre and performances, and community arts through public art. The centre also provides cultural performances and information, school education activities, and cultural and artistic tours. Additionally, there is a gallery shop that retails Aboriginal & Torres Strait Islander Artworks.
The centre runs various programs and performances as part of NAIDOC Week, a celebration of the history, culture and achievements of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. Additionally, since 2015, the centre has hosted the annual Art Fair, which is part of the Tarnanthi Festival of Contemporary Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Art. These events provide a platform for Indigenous artists to showcase their work and for visitors to engage with Indigenous culture and art.
