Sweet Briar College, located in Sweet Briar, Amherst County, Virginia, is a private women's liberal arts college. It was founded in 1901 by Indiana Fletcher Williams as a tribute to her late daughter, Daisy. The college is known for its historic Georgian Revival architecture and expansive campus, which spans over 3,250 acres of hills, forests, and fields.
The college derives its name from the former plantation of Elijah Fletcher and his descendants. Elijah Fletcher was a prominent figure in the 19th century, serving as a teacher, businessman, and the mayor of Lynchburg, Virginia. The plantation was initially known as Locust Ridge but was later renamed Sweet Briar, supposedly after the roses that grew on the land.
Sweet Briar College officially opened its doors in 1906, welcoming an initial cohort of 51 students. The college granted its first AB degrees in 1910, marking the beginning of its long-standing tradition of academic excellence.
