The Storefront for Art and Architecture is a non-profit organization that was established in 1982. Its main aim is to promote innovative artistic positions. This makes it a unique destination for tourists who are interested in exploring new and creative artistic perspectives.
In 1992, the gallery underwent a renovation by Steven Holl and artist Vito Acconci. The gallery is located at the intersection of three distinct neighborhoods: Chinatown, Little Italy, and SOHO. This location makes it a great starting point for tourists to explore these culturally rich neighborhoods.
The gallery is a narrow and elongated triangular strip, with a width that varies between one and six meters. The most distinctive element of the gallery is its facade, which is almost 30 meters long. The facade features a series of pivoting panels arranged like a puzzle, made of a hybrid material between concrete and recycled fibers. When the panels are opened, the facade dissolves and the gallery becomes part of the sidewalk, integrating with the city. This unique design is sure to intrigue tourists who appreciate innovative architecture.
