The Steintorturm is a significant historical structure in Brandenburg an der Havel. It stands as one of the four remaining gate towers of the two cities of Brandenburg, out of the original eight. This tower is part of the medieval fortification system that once consisted of ten gates, making it a key part of the city's historical defense system.
The Steintorturm is not just a historical monument, but also a museum. It houses the Museum im Steintorturm, one of the two branches of the Stadtmuseum Brandenburg. Visitors can explore the tower and its museum from April to October, for a small admission fee. This provides a unique opportunity to delve into the city's history while enjoying the view from the tower.
The Steintorturm has a rich history, having served as a prison during the Middle Ages. One of its most notable inmates was Peter Wannemacher, the son of a Brandenburg patrician. Wannemacher was imprisoned for ten weeks in 1622 for participating in a revolt. He left his mark on the tower by inscribing numerous messages on the inner wall, which are still visible today.
