The SS William G. Mather, a retired Great Lakes bulk freighter, is now a museum ship located in Cleveland, Ohio. It is one of only five such museum ships in the Great Lakes region. This historic vessel offers a unique insight into the maritime history of the area and the important role that freighters played in the region's economy.
In 1987, Cleveland-Cliffs, Inc. donated the SS William G. Mather to the Great Lakes Historical Society. The intention was to restore and preserve the ship as a museum and floating maritime museum. This donation marked the beginning of a new chapter in the ship's history, transforming it from a working freighter to a vessel of historical significance.
In 2006, the SS William G. Mather was acquired by the Great Lakes Science Center. Today, the ship serves as a focal point for interpreting the relationship between technology, history, commerce, and the environment. Visitors to the museum can explore the ship and learn about its history, the technology used in its construction and operation, and its impact on the region's commerce and environment.

The Steamship William G. Mather Museum in Cleveland offers visitors a chance to explore a restored 1925 Great Lakes freighter. This floating museum provides an interesting look into the maritime history of the Great Lakes region. Visitors can walk through various parts of the ship, including the engine room, pilothouse, and crew quarters, getting a sense of life aboard a lake freighter. The museum does a good job of presenting information about the ship's history and the role of shipping in the Great Lakes economy. Many visitors appreciate the self-guided tour format, which allows them to explore at their own pace. The volunteer staff is often praised for their knowledge and enthusiasm. However, some visitors note that certain areas of the ship can be difficult to navigate, especially for those with mobility issues. The museum's seasonal operation (typically open from May to October) and weather-dependent nature of the experience are also factors to consider. While the exhibits are informative, a few reviewers mention that some areas could benefit from updates or additional interactive elements to enhance the experience for younger visitors. Overall, the Steamship William G. Mather Museum offers an educational and unique experience for those interested in maritime history, though it may not appeal to everyone equally.
