Staten Island Zoo
Source

The Staten Island Zoo is situated in the West New Brighton neighborhood of Staten Island, New York. Unlike other major zoos in New York, it is not managed by the Wildlife Conservation Society. The zoo was established in August 1933 by Harold O'Connel and became part of the new Staten Island Zoological Society less than a year later.

Animal Collection at Staten Island Zoo

The current collection of the Staten Island Zoo includes over 1500 animals from more than 350 different species. Many of the animals have been obtained through purchases and exchanges with other zoos. During the 1930s and early 1960s, animals were also acquired during annual expeditions by zoo staff.

Staten Island Zoo Reviews

Staten Island Zoo has 1 rating.

  • Apollo's Insights AI-Generated

The Staten Island Zoo, located in New York City, offers a compact but diverse collection of animals. Visitors appreciate the zoo's manageable size, making it ideal for families with young children or those looking for a shorter outing. The reptile collection is particularly noteworthy, with a wide variety of species on display. Many guests enjoy the petting zoo area, which allows for up-close interactions with farm animals.

While the zoo receives praise for its educational programs and knowledgeable staff, some visitors note that certain exhibits could benefit from updates or expansion. The zoo's efforts in conservation and animal care are generally well-regarded, though a few reviewers mention concerns about enclosure sizes for some animals.

The zoo's layout is easy to navigate, and most find it clean and well-maintained. However, some visitors feel that the admission price is slightly high given the zoo's size. Despite this, many appreciate the zoo's role as a community resource and its contribution to wildlife education in Staten Island.

Overall, the Staten Island Zoo provides a pleasant, educational experience for visitors, particularly those with children or those interested in reptiles. While it may not compete with larger, more famous zoos, it offers a more intimate and manageable wildlife experience in New York City.
