Opened in 1754 as the Ducal Art and Natural History Cabinet, the museum has a rich history. It houses both scientific collections and exhibition collections. The scientific study collection is significantly larger than the publicly accessible part of the permanent exhibition, indicating the depth and breadth of the museum's resources.

The Extensive Study Collection

The museum's study collection is extensive and diverse, including 3,000 mammals, 50,000 birds, 10,300 bird eggs, 4,000 skulls and skeletons, 500 antlers and horns, 1,000 fish, amphibians and reptiles, as well as 80,000 butterflies, 85,000 beetles, 100,000 shells and snails, and 5,000 specimens from the field of paleontology. This wide range of specimens provides a comprehensive overview of the natural world.

Permanent Exhibitions at the Museum

In addition to its study collection, the museum also features several permanent exhibitions. These exhibitions cover a variety of topics, including aquariums, dioramas (which present prepared animals in a setting that mimics their habitat), birds, insects, invertebrates, and fossils. These exhibitions provide a more interactive and engaging way for visitors to learn about the natural world.

The State Natural History Museum in Brunswick, Germany, offers an engaging experience for visitors interested in natural sciences and local ecology. The museum houses an extensive collection of specimens, including fossils, minerals, and taxidermy animals, which provide a comprehensive overview of the region's natural history.

Visitors often appreciate the well-organized exhibits and the clear, informative displays that cater to both adults and children. The dinosaur collection, featuring impressive skeletal reconstructions, is frequently mentioned as a highlight. The museum also receives praise for its interactive elements, which help to make the learning experience more engaging for younger visitors.

On the positive side, the museum is commended for its knowledgeable staff and the depth of information provided. Many visitors find the exhibits educational and well-maintained. The building itself, with its historic architecture, adds to the overall experience.

However, some visitors note that the museum could benefit from more modern presentation techniques and updated exhibits in certain areas. A few reviews mention that some sections might feel a bit dated compared to more recently renovated natural history museums. Additionally, non-German speakers may find it challenging as not all information is available in multiple languages.

Despite these minor drawbacks, the State Natural History Museum is generally regarded as a valuable educational resource and an interesting attraction in Brunswick. It offers a solid introduction to natural history and is particularly appealing to families and science enthusiasts.
