The Stadtmuseum in Gera is one of four city museums, with a primary focus on the history of the city. It provides a comprehensive overview of the city's history, from its early origins to its development as a residence city of the Reuss. The museum's collections have been gradually built up and are divided into natural history and cultural history sections.
The Stadtmuseum is centrally located at Museumsplatz 1, housed in the building of the former correctional and orphanage house. This historic building, which dates back to the years 1724 to 1738, adds to the unique charm and appeal of the museum. It was initially built on the site of the Marienhospital, first mentioned in 1445 and burned down in 1639.
The Stadtmuseum offers a permanent exhibition titled "Romantic Gera". This exhibition provides a journey through Gera's history from the first settlement to the 21st century. Spread over four floors and covering approximately 1000 square meters, visitors can explore the city's history in a comprehensive and modern format.
