The Southwest Virginia Museum Historical State Park is a state-run museum in Virginia, dedicated to preserving the history of the southwestern part of the state. The Southwest Virginia Museum Historical State Park is located in Big Stone Gap, housed in a building constructed in the 1880s for Rufus A. Ayers, a former Virginia Attorney General. The building, designed and built by Charles A. Johnson, began construction in 1888 and was completed in 1895. This historical building adds to the charm and authenticity of the museum experience.
A significant part of the museum's collection is dedicated to the coal boom of the 1890s. Additionally, there are exhibits that focus on the history of Big Stone Gap and the surrounding area, as well as the story of the pioneers who migrated westward during the 18th century. These exhibits provide a comprehensive view of the region's history and development.

Park is closed in January and February. From Memorial Day through Labor Day, the park is open Monday-Friday, 10 a.m.-4 p.m., Saturday, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., and Sunday, 1 p.m.-5 p.m., the rest of the year, the hours are Tuesday- Friday, 10 a.m.-4 p.m., Saturday, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., and Sunday, 1 p.m.-5 p.m. The park is closed Thanksgiving and Christmas days.
