The Sonneberg Observatory is home to one of the world's largest collections of photographic plates, housed in its internal astronomy museum. These plates offer a unique insight into the history of astronomical observations. The observatory is primarily used for scientific outreach, making it an excellent place for visitors interested in astronomy to learn more about the field and its history.
The Sonneberg Observatory is equipped with two Cassegrain reflector telescopes with a diameter of 60 cm, a 50 cm diameter Schmidt telescope, and two astrographs with a diameter of 40 cm. During public scientific outreach meetings, visitors have the opportunity to use the 1926 refractor and the 60 cm Cassegrains. This provides a unique opportunity for visitors to experience the tools used by astronomers and gain a deeper understanding of the field.
