The Slawendorf Passentin is an archaeological open-air museum situated in the Passentin district of Penzlin, in the Mecklenburg Lake District of Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania, Germany. This museum offers a unique opportunity to explore the historical and cultural heritage of the region, with buildings reconstructed based on archaeological findings from the 9th and 10th centuries.
The museum, completed in 2000, consists of buildings reconstructed in their original size based on archaeological findings from the 9th and 10th centuries. It was designed as an early medieval teaching and experience site, embodying the concept of 'Living History', an idea brought to life by the sculptor Dorothee Rätsch.
The circular village from the early Middle Ages is made up of windowless post houses with wicker walls or in rod or block construction, all enclosed by a palisade fence. The only entrance is through the gate of the gatehouse, a block construction dating from the 9th to 11th centuries. A longhouse from the 8th to 10th centuries serves as a meeting place for 20-40 people. The buildings are constructed with a wood lattice, a mixture of clay and straw, and reed roofs. The village includes workshops, residential huts, and economic buildings.
