The Lajedo de Soledade Archaeological Site is a significant landmark located in the Apodi Plateau, within the municipality of Apodi, in the state of Rio Grande do Norte. This site is notable for being the largest exposure of limestone rock in the Potiguar Basin, making it a unique geological feature in the region.
Visitors to the Lajedo de Soledade can explore three types of archaeological remains that have been identified at the site. These include ceramic fragments, lithic material from the polished stone phase, and rock records. These artifacts provide a glimpse into the area's rich history and the lives of its prehistoric inhabitants.
The most abundant archaeological remains at Lajedo de Soledade are the rock records. These records are divided into two different typologies: paintings and engravings. The paintings can be found in 30 areas of the Lajedo, while the engravings are located in 26 areas. These rock records offer a unique insight into the artistic and cultural practices of the site's ancient inhabitants.
The Lajedo de Soledade is also a significant site for paleontological research. In January 1993, a team led by Professor Leon Diniz Dantas de Oliveira from the Federal University of Rio Grande do Norte's Department of Geology carried out excavations at the site. They discovered an abundance of fossil material, representing various animals of the Pleistocene megafauna, including giant sloths and armadillos, mastodons, toxodonts, jaguars, dogs, horses, and reptiles.
