Shirayamahime Jinja is a Shinto shrine situated in the Sannomiyamachi neighborhood of Hakusan city in Ishikawa Prefecture, Japan. This shrine is the ichinomiya of the former Kaga Province and is the head shrine of approximately 2000 'Hakusan Jinja' across Japan. The shrine's main festival is held annually on May 6.

Geographical Position of Shirayamahime Jinja

The Shirayamahime Jinja shrine is located at the foot of the 2702 meter high Mount Hakusan. This mountain, considered sacred, is situated on the border of Ishikawa and Gifu Prefectures. The shrine consists of the 'Hakusan Hongū' or Shimo-Hakusan, located at the foot of the mountain, and the 'Oku-no-miya' located at the summit of the Gozengamine peak of the mountain.

Origins of Shirayamahime Jinja

The origins of Shirayamahime Jinja are not clearly known. However, the mountain where the shrine is located has been an object of worship since prehistoric times and is one of the Three Holy Mountains of Japan. The shrine claims that it was first established by the legendary Kofun period Emperor Sujin and was rebuilt in 716 by Empress Genshō.
