Annual Events at Sherman Indian High School

Every year in mid-April, Sherman Indian High School hosts a one-day pow-wow, a traditional Native American gathering. This event marks the end of the school's parent-teacher conference week. During this week, SIHS also holds an annual Talent Show on Thursday and the Miss Sherman Pageant on Friday evening, traditionally the evening before the pow-wow. These events provide an opportunity for visitors to experience Native American culture firsthand.

The Sherman Indian Museum in Riverside, United States, offers visitors an insightful look into Native American history and culture, with a specific focus on the Sherman Institute, a former boarding school for Native American students. The museum houses a collection of artifacts, photographs, and documents that tell the story of the school and its students from the early 1900s to the present day.

Visitors appreciate the museum's effort to present a balanced view of the boarding school era, showcasing both positive and negative aspects of the students' experiences. The exhibits are informative and well-organized, providing a comprehensive overview of Native American education and assimilation policies.

The museum's strength lies in its authentic representation of Native American life and the preservation of cultural heritage. Many visitors find the personal stories and accounts of former students particularly moving and enlightening. The staff is often praised for their knowledge and willingness to answer questions, enhancing the overall experience.

However, some visitors note that the museum is relatively small and can be explored in a short amount of time. Additionally, a few reviewers mention that some exhibits could benefit from updates or more interactive elements to engage younger audiences.

Despite its compact size, the Sherman Indian Museum is generally regarded as a valuable educational resource that offers important insights into a often overlooked aspect of American history. It provides a thought-provoking experience for those interested in Native American culture and the complex history of Native American education in the United States.
