Sherborne Old Castle and its collection

Sherborne Old Castle
Source

After two sieges during the Civil War, visitors to the castle today see it in its more recent role as a romantic ruin in the grounds of the 'new' Sherborne Castle. Only the Southwest Gatehouse and parts of the castle including the Great Tower and the North Range survived.

Sherborne Old Castle, located in Sherborne, England, offers visitors a glimpse into medieval history. The ruins of this 12th-century fortified palace, once home to Sir Walter Raleigh, stand as a testament to the area's rich past. Many visitors appreciate the peaceful atmosphere and the opportunity to explore the castle grounds freely. The castle's location provides picturesque views of the surrounding countryside, which adds to its appeal.

While some find the information provided about the castle's history somewhat limited, others enjoy piecing together the story of the site through the existing structures and their own imagination. The castle's connection to notable historical figures, including Raleigh and the bishops of Salisbury, adds depth to its significance.

Visitors often mention the well-maintained grounds and the ability to have a picnic on site as positive aspects. However, some note that the castle is primarily ruins, which may disappoint those expecting a fully intact structure. Access to certain areas can be challenging for visitors with mobility issues, as the terrain is uneven in places.

The castle's proximity to Sherborne Abbey and the newer Sherborne Castle is seen as an advantage, allowing for a comprehensive historical experience in the area. While the site may not offer extensive facilities, many find the admission price reasonable for the experience provided.

Overall, Sherborne Old Castle is generally viewed as an interesting stop for history enthusiasts and those who enjoy exploring ancient ruins in a scenic setting. It may not be a full-day destination on its own, but it forms an integral part of Sherborne's historical landscape.
