Schloss Wespenstein is a historic castle located in the city of Gräfenthal in Thuringia, right on the border with Bavaria. The castle played a significant role in securing the pass section of a medieval army and trade route that stretched from Leipzig via Saalfeld to Nuremberg over the ridge of the Thuringian Slate Mountains. This strategic location underscores the historical importance of the castle.
Today, Schloss Wespenstein serves multiple purposes. It houses a restaurant with a large beer garden and a castle pension, making it a great place for visitors to relax and enjoy. The castle, which has been privately owned since 1993, is also planned to be expanded into a museum. One of the preserved features of the castle is the chapel where Martin Luther once preached. This renovated chapel can be used for weddings and services.
