The Schifffahrtsmuseum der oldenburgischen Unterweser, also known as the Schifffahrtsmuseum Brake, is a museum that focuses on the history of Oldenburg shipping. It is situated in Brake and has an additional branch located in the former Villa Steenken in Elsfleth. The museum offers a deep dive into the maritime history of the 19th and early 20th centuries in the Grand Duchy and later Free State of Oldenburg.
The Schifffahrtsmuseum der oldenburgischen Unterweser was inaugurated on April 24, 1960. It is housed in the Braker Telegraph, which forms a significant part of the permanent exhibition. The museum has undergone extensive restoration work and the permanent exhibition was revised between May 2013 and September 2014. Since September 27, 2014, the main building of the museum has been reopened to the public.
The Schifffahrtsmuseum der oldenburgischen Unterweser has a branch located in the former Villa Steenken in Elsfleth. This branch was opened to the public on March 14, 2010. It offers various thematic areas including the maritime tradition of the city of Elsfleth, maritime associations, shipowners in the region, the Weser sea shipping route, fishing, nautical training at the Elsfleth maritime school, women on board, chronometers of the Wempe Chronometerwerke founded in Elsfleth in 1878, reconstruction of a ship bridge, and shipbuilding and shipyards in the region.
