Design and Purpose of Schaulager

The Schaulager museum was commissioned by the Laurenz Foundation and designed by the renowned Swiss architectural firm Herzog & de Meuron. The name 'Schaulager' is a combination of the German words 'schauen' (to see) and 'lagern' (to store), reflecting the museum's unique function as a place to store, study, and present modern and contemporary art.

Art Collection at Schaulager

The Schaulager museum boasts a collection of more than 650 paintings, sculptures, installations, video works, and films from over 150 artists. Schaulager in Münchenstein, Switzerland, is a unique art institution that combines storage, research, and exhibition spaces. Visitors appreciate its striking architectural design by Herzog & de Meuron. The museum houses a significant collection of contemporary art, with a focus on preserving and studying works that are not always on display.

The exhibitions at Schaulager are often described as thought-provoking and well-curated, showcasing both established and emerging artists. Many visitors find the space itself to be an artistic experience, with its innovative use of light and space.

However, some reviewers note that the museum's location, slightly outside of Basel, can be inconvenient for tourists. Additionally, as Schaulager is not a traditional museum, some visitors expecting a more conventional art viewing experience may find it challenging to navigate or understand its concept.

The guided tours receive positive feedback for providing insightful context to the artworks and the institution's mission. However, some visitors mention that the limited opening hours and occasional closure for installation periods can be disappointing if not planned for in advance.

Overall, Schaulager is well-regarded for its contribution to art preservation and research, offering a different perspective on how art can be experienced and understood. It's particularly appealing to those interested in contemporary art and innovative museum concepts.
