In 1970, railway enthusiasts in Phillips took the initiative to preserve the legacy of the Sandy River and Rangeley Lakes Railroad. They decided to rebuild a part of the route for museum operations. Since 1985, the name “Sandy River and Rangeley Lakes Railroad” has been revived and used again, adding a touch of authenticity to the museum.
Today, visitors can experience a piece of history by traveling a short section of the Sandy River and Rangeley Lakes Railroad near Phillips during weekends. The museum operates a gasoline-powered replica of the locomotive 4 of the Sandy River Railroad, along with three other diesel and gasoline-powered locomotives. This offers a unique opportunity to relive the past and understand the importance of railways in the region's development.
