Sandoway Discovery Center offers an engaging window into South Florida’s delicate marine and freshwater ecosystems through interactive exhibits and educational programs. Since opening in 1998, Sandoway has inspired students, educators, naturalists, community leaders, and visitors from Delray Beach and surrounding areas. This one-of-a-kind, hands-on learning facility highlights Florida’s fragile environments and the plants and animals that depend on them. Visitors of all ages can encounter native and invasive reptiles, meet sharks and other fish in the center’s 15,000-gallon reef pool, explore Southeast Florida’s largest shell collection, and participate in special events such as Earth Day celebrations and beach clean-ups. The children’s activity room invites young learners to enjoy story time, study butterfly life cycles, and examine fascinating specimens under a microscope. Outdoor features, including the observation deck, butterfly garden, and dune exhibit, further showcase the area’s unique coastal ecosystem. Housed in a historic beachfront home, Sandoway Discovery Center also offers a self-guided tour that reflects Delray Beach’s rich natural and architectural history. Features such as Dade County pine floors, Bald Cypress ceilings, French doors, and arched staircase window evoke the charm of early seaside living. Daily activities include shark and stingray feedings, aquarium feedings, live animal encounters, field trips, outreach programs, and more. The Friends of Sandoway House Nature Center, Inc. is a nonprofit organization committed to educating the public about Delray’s coastal and marine ecosystems and Florida’s natural history, ensuring these resources are protected and appreciated by future generations.
