The Sabauda Gallery in Turin, Italy, is a notable art museum that houses an impressive collection of European paintings from the 14th to the 20th centuries. Visitors often appreciate the gallery's extensive collection of works by Italian, Flemish, and Dutch masters. The museum is particularly renowned for its Piedmontese art and the royal collections of the House of Savoy.
Many reviewers praise the quality and variety of the artworks on display, including pieces by renowned artists such as Van Dyck, Rembrandt, and Mantegna. The gallery's layout and organization generally receive positive feedback, allowing for a chronological journey through art history. The recent renovation and relocation to the Palazzo Reale has improved the overall visitor experience, with better lighting and more spacious rooms.
However, some visitors mention that the museum can be less crowded compared to more famous Italian art galleries, which can be seen as both a positive (for a more relaxed viewing experience) and a negative (possibly indicating it's somewhat underappreciated). A few reviewers note that the information provided for some artworks could be more comprehensive, especially for international visitors.
The gallery's location within the Royal Palace complex is often cited as convenient, allowing visitors to explore multiple cultural sites in one area. However, some find the entrance a bit difficult to locate.
Overall, the Sabauda Gallery offers a high-quality art experience in Turin, appealing particularly to those interested in European painting and Italian art history. While it may not have the international fame of some other Italian museums, it provides a rich and rewarding experience for art enthusiasts.
The Sabauda Gallery has a very extensive collection of outstanding paintings by Italian Old Masters from the Medieval Period up to the end of the 18th Century. From the Medieval Period,I saw impressive paintings with devotional theme subject matter by Duccio("Madonna and Christ Child",Sienese),Niccolo Di Tommaso("Madonna and Child With Saint Gaudensis ,Saint Catherine and 2 Angels"),Giovanni Baronzio("Ascension of Christ",Riminiese),Barnaba Da Modena("Virgin and Christ",Piedmontese),Bernardo Daddi("Coronation of Virgin",Florentine),Marrioto di Nardo("4 Evangelists"),Taddeo Di Bartolo("Madonna and Child Enthroned With Saints"),and Matteo di Pacino. The Sabauda Gallery's collection of paintings from the Renaissance Period is even more comprehensive than its Medieval Period Paintings with superb paintings by Lorenzo Di Credi,Sandro Botticelli("Virgin and Christ Child"),Fillipino Lippi,Niccolo Corso("Saint Ambrose Enthroned With Saint Martin and Saint Sebastian"),Giovanni Boccati("Crucifixion")Macrino D'Alba(Piedmontese,"Virgin and Child in Glory With Musical Angels"),Bernard Orley(Netherlandish Master,"Charlemagne Deposing Passion Relics"),Roger Vander Weyden(Netherlandish Master,"Visitation"),Hans Memling(Netherlandish,"Passion of Christ"),Jan Van Eyck("Stigmata of Saint Francis"),and Master of Female Half Lengths(Netherlandish,"Lute Player"),among others. Due to the prodigiousness of the Sabauda's collection of Old Master Paintings,I restricted my review to its Medieval and Renaissance Period Paintings..I realize its collection of Baroque Period Paintings by leading Italian Masters is also worthy of approbation.I stayed at the Sabauda Art Gallery from 9;30 AM to closing time at 7 PM,because being at the Sabauda was a priceless experience.
