The SS Klondike refers to two sternwheelers, with the second one now serving as a National Historic Site in Whitehorse, Yukon. These sternwheelers were used to transport freight between Whitehorse and Dawson City along the Yukon River. The second SS Klondike, which is the one tourists can visit today, is an almost exact replica of the first one and was in operation from 1937 to 1950.

SS Klondike as a National Historic Site

On June 24, 1967, the SS Klondike was officially designated as a National Historic Site of Canada. Today, it serves as a tourist attraction and is open to the public during the summer months. Visitors can explore the sternwheeler and learn about its history and the role it played in the transportation of goods along the Yukon River.

S.S. Klondike National Historic Site Reviews

S.S. Klondike National Historic Site has 1 rating.

  • Apollo's Insights AI-Generated

The S.S. Klondike National Historic Site in Whitehorse, Canada, offers visitors a glimpse into the region's riverboat history. This open-air museum features the restored S.S. Klondike, the largest sternwheeler to ply the Yukon River. Visitors can explore the boat's decks, cabins, and cargo hold, gaining insight into life aboard these vessels during the early 20th century.

The site provides informative displays and exhibits that detail the importance of sternwheelers in the development of the Yukon. Many visitors appreciate the well-preserved state of the boat and the opportunity to step back in time. The guided tours, when available, are often highlighted as informative and engaging, adding depth to the experience.

However, some visitors note that the experience can be relatively brief, especially if not participating in a guided tour. Additionally, the seasonal nature of the site means it's not accessible year-round, which can disappoint some travelers.

The picturesque setting along the Yukon River adds to the appeal, offering good photo opportunities. While the site may not occupy visitors for an extended period, it generally receives positive feedback for its historical value and the unique perspective it provides on Yukon's transportation history.

Overall, the S.S. Klondike National Historic Site is considered a worthwhile stop for those interested in local history or maritime heritage, though it may not be an all-day destination.
