Roter Bär Pit
Source

The Roter Bär Pit, located in Sankt Andreasberg in the Upper Harz, is a historical iron ore mine that was in operation from around 1800 to the 1860s. Today, it is managed as a visitor mine by the Sankt Andreasberg Association for History and Antiquities, and is known as the Lehrbergwerk Grube Roter Bär. Visitors can explore the mine and learn about its history and the mining processes that took place there.

Multiple Uses of the Roter Bär Pit

The Roter Bär Pit serves multiple purposes today. Besides being a visitor mine, it is also used for drinking water extraction and provides a winter shelter for bats. Excavation work is carried out to further explore and secure the old structures of the mine. There is a strong emphasis on preserving the mine's original condition as much as possible, adding to its historical authenticity.
