Source

The site of the Roman Open-Air Museum Hechingen Stein was discovered in 1972. Subsequent excavations from 1978 to 1981 unveiled the remnants of a large Roman villa rustica. This villa included residential and economic buildings, all enclosed within a wall. This discovery provides a unique insight into the architectural and societal structures of the Roman era.

Exhibits and Reconstructions at the Museum

The Roman Open-Air Museum Hechingen Stein displays the excavations, including the original Roman underfloor heating system, parts of which have survived till today. The museum also strives to recreate the Roman era through detailed reconstructions. These efforts provide visitors with a tangible understanding of Roman life and architecture.

Inside the Reconstructed Main House

In the reconstructed main house of the Roman Open-Air Museum Hechingen Stein, visitors can view original artifacts discovered at the excavation site. The museum also features a triclinium, which is the dining room where the Roman master of the house would have taken meals while reclining. Additionally, the sleeping quarters of a child are also on display, providing a glimpse into the domestic life of the Roman era.
