The European Bison Reserve of Sainte-Eulalie, also known as the Margeride, is an animal park situated in Sainte-Eulalie in Lozère. This reserve was established as an extension of the European bison rescue plan that has been in operation in Poland's Białowieża Forest since the 1920s.

Bison Population and Habitat

The Margeride reserve is home to approximately 30 bisons that live in semi-freedom across an area of about 200 hectares, situated at an altitude of over 1,300 meters. These bovines were introduced to this environment, which closely resembles their natural habitat, in 1991.

Visiting the Reserve

Visitors can explore the reserve on foot for the first part, which is entirely enclosed and spans a distance of one kilometer. A second, larger park where the bisons roam in semi-freedom can be visited either in a horse-drawn carriage or on a snow sled, depending on the season.

The Reserve Bisons Margeride Europe in Sainte-Eulalie, France offers visitors a chance to see European bison in a semi-wild environment. The reserve provides guided tours in all-terrain vehicles, allowing guests to observe these impressive animals up close. Many visitors appreciate the educational aspect of the experience, learning about bison conservation efforts and the animals' behavior. The knowledgeable guides often receive praise for their informative commentary. However, some visitors mention that the tour can feel a bit short, and the visibility of the bison can vary depending on the day and season. The natural setting of the reserve is generally well-received, offering a peaceful atmosphere in the Margeride region. While most find the experience enjoyable, a few visitors note that the price may be a bit high for the length of the tour. Overall, the reserve provides a unique opportunity to see European bison in France, though expectations should be managed regarding animal sightings.
