The Reiterhaus, located on Bundesstraße 96 in Neusalza-Spremberg, is a monument and local museum. It was built before 1660 as a small farmhouse in the unique Umgebinde style and was supplemented with a west wing, also known as the Reiter wing, before 1800. This makes it one of the oldest and most picturesque Umgebinde houses in the Oberlausitz area.
The Reiterhaus owes its name to a colorful wooden horseman figure that adorns the gable of the west wing. The house was originally built for a small farmer around 1660. Notably, the city's most famous son, Johann George Schreiber, was born near this historic building in 1676.
The museum at the Reiterhaus provides a detailed look at the specific construction method used in the building, through text and image material. It also offers insights into the everyday life of small farmers, home weavers, and craftsmen in the Oberlausitz region during the 19th century. Visitors can see original furnishings and work tools displayed in several rooms, including a living and weaving room equipped for the region's typical home weaving, a shoemaker's room, a bedroom, and a hallway.
